HeartGift is a non-profit organization that provides lifesaving heart surgery to children from around the world where specialized treatment is either scarce or nonexistent. HeartGift is able to accomplish this unique mission via local partnerships with hospitals, doctors and community members. Here in Houston HeartGift serves six patients a year in partnership with Children’s Memorial Hermann Hospital and University of Texas Physicians.
Jose is four years old and lives in Franks Eddy Belize with his mom, dad and sister Jaimey. Jose had a congenital heart defect, a subaortic membrane. Through the HeartGift Program Jose was able to come to Houston and had an open heart repair.
Each child who comes to Houston for heart surgery is paired with a loving host family where at least one person speaks their language. In addition to host families HeartGift relies on volunteers for transportation, translation, meals and hospital visits.
